Topics range from upcoming movies, current TV, Sci Fi conventions, books/comic books we are reading, and how much we'd pay to kick some directors in their hammers. And by hammers, we mean their... Well, you see where that's going. This podcast is explicit, so consider yourself warned.</itunes:summary>

Now I had been reading them before that time, but the same way any kid does…tear through the superhero books and try and figure out the Archie comics (pre-teen understanding of girls).

But one day while I was at my friend Don Hoffmans house he showed me some comics that his mom read. That statement alone was odd, but these comics were unlike anything I had seen before. They were oversized, black and white, and the most engaging stories. It was truely at that point that I found comic books for the first time. And lord knows, my future would not be the same.

Elfquest is not about your traditional elves, and in many ways the characters depicted have no similarity to elves that we all know other than the pointy ears. The species is actually a space faring folk that land on a primitive earth like planet. At that point the visitors shaped themselves into what we consider ‘high elves’ to walk amongst the humans. But there was another species here, a cro-magnon proto human (called trolls) that caused their ship to crash, trapping the visitors on the planet.

The stories in Elfquest take place a 1000 years later when the elves have broken into different groups, some more accepting and embracing of their new home and others still holding onto the old ways. The ‘Wolfriders‘ are more a mix of what we think of as elves and druid/native american philosophys. They are the main focus in the books.

Over the years, there has been plenty of rumors and attempts at an Elfquest movie (and TV show). But really no success. In the 90′s there was a direct to video moving comic animated feature, but even I passed on that. But it looks like some fans have taken it upon themselves to work on a film.

You can read all about the project and watch the trailer at Elfquest: A Fan Imagining. They have the full blessing by the creators of the comic series, Richard and Wendi Pini. I wish them the best, if nothing else they have the best looking elves I have ever seen!

Its got a great premise “The series is set in a contemporary world very much similar to the real one, with one notable exception: a number of people have some form of superpower. The series follows a superpowered CIA squad, known informally as “The Boys”, whose job it is to keep watch on superheroes and, if necessary, intimidate or kill them.” – Wikipedia

Recently I found a fan film from Cynical Panda that is pretty good and certainly captures the books first issues. Sound mixing is shite at times, but otherwise well worth a watch.

Tony Young, San Diego City Council President, has announced that that San Diego will start having a downtown parade to coincide with Comic Con. Apparently Tony is a bit of a sci-fi/comic geek (after our own hearts) and thought this would be a great add on to the show.

This is of course a ploy to get additional hotel nights/meals out of attendies by putting the San Diego Comic Con parade on Wednesday. A good idea and certainly a way for the locals who can’t/won’t go to the convention at least get to share in the geekdom a little bit.

I have been attending DragonCon out of Atlanta for almost 10 years now and one of the things that drew me to this convention was the fact that they have a parade. And I do so love a parade! I seriously doubt that San Diegos parade will ever be as good as DragonCon’s, just because it will be yet another corporate tool. True that it may have nicer floats and maybe even big balloon versions of comic characters, but it won’t have the heart and soul that the fans bring to the DragonCon parade.

Frankly I don’t know much about him, but in that sense I am happy. Its better to have a relative unknown than someone to place expectations on. Here is the official press release from Sony:

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 1, 2010 – After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”

Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment. B-roll footage of the announcement will be available via satellite later this evening — see uplink times coordinate information below.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

This week sees a major change in one of the most iconic characters in comic books. Issue #600 of Wonder Woman will start the new era of the character, including a brand new history. And yes, it involves changing her past to change her future.

Normally I am wary of writers mucking around with canon, but this is starting the storyline by J. Michael Straczynski and JMS has a great history of breathing new life into old characters, so he has my attention at the moment. Here is the official statement from DC:

Suppose you woke up one morning, or turned a corner, and suddenly the life you had been leading up to that moment…was not the life you were leading.

Suppose someone went back in time and changed one thing, and it changed your life to the point that you had little or no memory of what life had been like before the change happened. What would you do to get it back? Should you get it back? Who did it? And maybe more important…why did they do it?

That is the question faced by Diana starting in issue 600.

The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape.

It’s now nearly twenty years later. Diana has been raised in an urban setting, but with a foot in both worlds. She has little or no memory of the other timeline. She knows only what she’s been told by those who raised her On the run, hunted, she must try to survive, help the other refugee Amazons escape the army that is still after them, discover who destroyed Paradise Island and why…and if the timeline can be corrected or not. She also does not yet have access to her full powers, but will be gaining them as she goes. Along the way, she will face a range of enemies — human and otherwise — who we have not seen before.

What we also haven’t seen before is her new look, the first significant change in her appearance since the character debuted in 1941 (not counting the mod look used briefly in the sixties, about which the less said the better). It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant…a street-fighter’s look which also incorporates elements of her classic design. It reflects the two sides warring for ultimate victory, and underscores the path she must take.

It’s a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior, in partial answer to the many female fans over the years who’ve asked, “how does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out?”) She can close it up to pass unnoticed…open it for the freedom to fight…lose the jacket or keep it on…it has pockets (the other fan question, “where does she carry anything in that outfit?”, it can be accessorized…it’s a Wonder Woman look designed for the 21st century. The bracelets are still there, but made more colorful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark. This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work…letting her enemies know that she’s getting closer.

This is Wonder Woman reborn, literally and metaphorically: fast, elegant, tough, smart…the savior of her people, their guardian and protector…avenging the fall of Paradise Island, searching to discover why Paradise Island was abandoned by the gods. In the end, what she discovers will change her life and the world forever…and she will come face to face with a decision that will mean life or death for the entire human race.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has redesigned their organizations logo and refreshed the look of their website. My heart has a special place for the CBLDF and I have been a card carrying member since 1995. This organzation helps protect the first amendment rights of comic store owners and readers.

From Charles Brownstein, the Executive Director of the CBLDF:

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a community of people who love comics and recognize the First Amendment as the cornerstone of the medium’s creative vitality. The new CBLDF.org is designed to reflect and serve that community, with frequently updated news about comics, free expression, and the people who are taking strides to keep both healthy and strong.

Now, and in the weeks to come, you’ll find regular updates about the state of Free Expression, and informative articles about the CBLDF’s supporters and the work they do. You’ll also find better resources about the Fund’s history, along with tools concerning comics censorship and how to fight it.

This page is a work in progress, so we ask for your patience as we work out the kinks. We also ask you to get involved. We are always seeking writers, educators, lawyers, artists, and students to join the ranks of contributors who will make CBLDF.org a vibrant hub of activity in the fight for free speech. You can contact me, Charles.Brownstein@cbldf.org, to lend your voice to our efforts.

For more than 20 years the CBLDF has stood up against those who’d censor comic books because of the grassroots effort of passionate supporters who believe in comics and free speech. Thank you for bringing us this far. Let’s see what we can do together to make the future of Free Expression in comics even stronger!

I am at the Bill Willingham panel right now and I am stoked. Bill has been a comic creator for just about forever. Currently he is best known for his Fables series from Vertigo Comics, a DC Comics imprint. Fables for me is a Gateway Comic, in the sense that I can give it to a non-comic book reader and they will come back wanting more and more. In fact I have done that and have no shame for it!

Today he dropped some great news (spoilers ahead).

The upcoming Fables issues will be all about Rose Red and her recovery after loosing Boy Blue. This story arc will go for 5 issues and finish with Rose leading the animals of the farm into battle.

Another excellent bit of news is that there are two busts coming out, one for Bigsby and one for Snow. Both were shown to us and look great. Also they are putting out an updated Fables Covers edition collecting the first 75 issues. This is great news as the last covers edition is long sold out.

We also got a sneak on the next Jack of Fables storyline with a cover showing the Page sisters all in Charlie Angels battle poses. The real huh moment on that cover was due to one of the sisters cradling a baby, but who’s baby is it? Bill was not willing to revel that.

One of the questions asked of Bill was which Fables characters do you like to write about the most, he said Snow and Bigsby. This shouldn’t be a big surprise to the fans of the book, but one thing did strike us as odd, he said that Snow White was to be married in an upcoming Fables issue. But she is already married to Bigsby…dang him and his vague spoilers!

There were a lot of Wizard of Oz fans in the audience and they asked if they would be seeing more of their characters soon. Bill stated that Dorothy would be showing up soon in a big way later on and other characters would continue to be seen in the books.

Sometime last year we got news out of Hollywood that ABC had picked up the writes to Fables for a TV show. Unfortunately when Bill was asked about that he said that there is no news on the TV series and in fact made it sound like there was SO much dead air about it that its like it never was talked about in the first place. Guess we shall see.

His first prose novel based on the Fables universe came out last year with Peter & Max. He said that Peter will be showing up in the Fable comics in the future. Oh, and the next prose Down the Mysterly River was sold to Tor books recently. It is actually an old book that he had published a long time ago that he picked back up and rewrote. It’s about Max the Wolf, a young man who is sent to the wrong afterlife due to his name causing him to be mistaken as an animal. So its off to the animal afterlife for him. It’s a Young Adult book and sounds interesting. It is not tied into fables, but there are some pinpoint (non official) connections.

This was by far one of my favorite panels just because I am in love with the material so much. Here are some links for fans to check out!

Well it has been an exhausting day at McCormick Place. Not only at the convention center but around town. And we really haven’t stopped until this weeks podcast was finished being recorded around 2am this morning.

The day started out well with a good breakfast and a lovely trip on the local bus to the convention center. Okay, strike that last part…our bus had someone previously throw up on it and it was NASTY smelling. But at least the breakfast was good before that. Welcome to Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (that’s me with my arms raised)!

I ran through most of the panels we attended today in individual posts. Overall we were impressed with the various companies and what they had to offer. All the comic publishers had some type of freebie to hand out. And DC really broke the bank by handing out about 15 of their newest comics, very cool!

At the Marvel booth we were graced by their editor in chief Joe Quesada. He was busy with an interview at the time but was very friendly with the fans. Oh, and they had some booth babes handing out comics and even Spider-Man showed up for a bit!

The Dark Horse booth had a special BPRD event going on, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense from the Hellboy universe. We got honorary agent badges and pins. They also had Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy and Guy Davis, one of the major artists in his books, signing items. Great couple of guys. Another cool item they had at the booth was a mini-bust from the TV show Dexter showing Dexter looking at a piece of evidence while holding a knife behind his back. This statue will be released this fall.

On one side of the show they also had two vehicles on display, the classic Batmobile and the Delorian from Back to the Future. Very cool displays even if poor Batman looked quite cold in this tights.

Kevin entered a raffle for a custom tattoo to be inked on Sunday. Unfortunately he did not win, but the money went to charity so its still kinda a win…even if it was my $5!

After a long day of hanging out at the convention center we headed out for some time on the town. I have to say Chicago is definitely growing on me, hope to spend more time here in the future.

Coming this October to DVD, Talking with Gods: the Grant Morrison Documentary. If you’re not familiar with Grant, he has written and reworked many of the classic DC heroes like Animal Man all the way to Superman. He set a new dark tone for Batman with Arkam Asylum and recently set the DC universe with the Final Crisis storyline.

Today we got a special presentation of this upcoming documentary. On hand were the producer, director and principal photographer.

The documentary will be sectioned into three parts, focusing on his early career in the 70s, his odd ball crazy psychedelic writing of the 90s and then his recent work with DC Comics.

They wanted to do this documentary to explain how his life and history are intertwined with his comic writing. And while he comes across as a chaos magician it is really just his special view on life that makes him so appealing.

We were treated with several clips and it was like a lite appetizer before an awesome meal. Just tempting you for the later feast to come. It features extensive interviews with many top comic book creators that have worked with Grant over the years. And of course, plenty of interviews with the subject himself.

One of the surprises for the film makers was that Grant works non-stop. He has a great work ethic and is down to earth about his creations. Very committed to his work with a great aura about him.

Grant seemed bemused that someone would want to do a documentary about him. But he agreed, for one reason to put the facts right about his life. Many rumors are out there about extensive drug use, of which are put to rest.

Really looking forward to learning more about this iconic writer, October can’t get here soon enough! Oh, and for next year they have a new documentary that they just started working on: Warren Ellis – Captured Ghosts!

Awesome panel with Mike Mignola here at C2E2. Mike told us about an upcoming Hellboy comic centered on the American West and a 2 part Abe Sapian series based in Russia.

One of the questions brought forward was why he hasn’t done more with the Asian mythologies, of which he commented that it was very alien to him. In fact the recent comic with Hellboy in Japan made him realize he didn’t know how to draw a Japanese door! He feels that he needs to find the right artist for these stories. One of which he wants to base in China.

Some of the upcoming Hellboy stories will take place in that 50 year span where he roamed the world, before the prophecy came about on his destiny. This is excellent news as Hellboy comics have been absent from the book shelves over the last couple of years.

One thing he emphasized over and over is that he is doing his best to keep the Hellboy movie universe and comic universe very separate. He firmly believes that what Del Toro does with the films are very different than the comics. Obviously the Liz/Hellboy relationship are very different in the two, I hope he keeps to his guns on this.

Mike is expanding his art line on his website, www.mikemignola.com. He will be providing more limited edition prints and sounds like we have a lot to look forward too.

I can just hear all the Buffy fans and Browncoats yipping in glee right about now.

Deadline New York reports that Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with Joss to direct the biggest Superhero film of all time. The film is going to be fast tracked for release May of 2012. Right now we are expecting Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and maybe the Hulk (Edward Norton).

This is an interesting choice, considering that Joss is better known for character creation and writing than he is for directing. But he has had some great success with the Marvel line over the last few years, in particularly the X-Men franchise with The Astonishing X-Men.

Frankly I was hoping he would take on the Runaways movie (not the Joan Jett biopic) coming from Marvel next year. He was one of the writers for the second volume of this excellent Marvel comics series and definitely his forte with young characters. But I am quite happy to see him taking the lead on this diverse property and wish him the best on this film.

While she has no super powers, she has political and military might and knows how to use it. I remember her best leading a group called the Suicide Squad. This was a band of super villains sent on suicide missions that if they completed, and got home alive, they would be pardoned for their crimes.

Seeing her stand up to these baddies showed just how much brass she commanded. And now I am happy to hear (thanks Variety) that her character will be appearing in the upcoming Green Lantern movie! Not only that, but she will be portrade by Angela Bassett.

That last part gives me some pause, as much as I love Bassett, Waller is a fairly large woman. I am only going to guess Hollywood decided that they wanted a strong woman in the role and not necessarily a woman of ‘size’. Kind of a shame, but at least they got a quality actress for the roll.

Speaking of which, I am going to take a guess here and say that she will be doing what Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) has been doing in the Marvel movies. Probably showing up, keeping an eye on these new super powered people and putting together a team in the future. Perhaps she will be the inspiration behind a Justice League of America movie!

So Comic Alliance is one of my favorite comic book news blogs out there. And yesterday they presented an excellent April Fools joke.

Its been awhile since we heard anything from Alan Moore about his Extraordinary Gentlemen property (talking the comic not the movie, he won’t talk about that thing at all), so when CA broke the news that a new series was coming up we were suspect. And what would be better than one based in America during the 1980′s!? I love the fact that all the team members are TV or Movie characters…since America has no literary history.

What a team too, here is their snipit on the project. Be sure to read their full article also.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – America: 1988

When war-hero-turned-handyman Kesuke Miyagi is found drained of blood, it becomes clear that the occult gang known as the Lost Boys are targeting the only individuals that can stop them from complete domination of America. It’s the perfect case for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen–except that their government contact, Oscar Goldman, disbanded the team in 1979 after they defeated Mr. Han’s army of the living dead.

Now, disgraced scientist Emmet Brown has to put together a new team to combat the growing threat of the Lost Boys and their leader, a newly resurrected vampire kingpin Tony Montana: Transportation specialist Jack Burton, ex-commando B.A. Baracus, tech wizard Angus MacGyver and the mysteriously powerful femme fatale known only as “Lisa.” But will Brown be able to stop the Lost Boys before time runs out?

On the horizon we have the Green Lantern film being released June 2011. And we have been reporting on the Batman and Superman franchises in pre-production. Also there is the Flash film that has been in the heavy rumor mill over the last year…but what else? What do you think should be the next big DC hero in the theaters?

Back in 2008 I was speaking with Ron Glass at the Shore Leave convention in Baltimore when he mentioned he was writing a comic book. And not just any comic, but a story that would fill out the mysterious past of Shepherd Book!

As all Firefly fans know, Book was not at all forthcoming about his history. And due to his actions you knew he was not always a man of the cloth spreading the good word. And soon we will know that history.

According to an article on Comic Book Resources, the story will arrive in hardcover graphic novel format this November. I do recommend you hop over and read the CBR article as they have a great interview with the graphic novels artist, Chris Samnee.

One of my favorite comic creators, Peter Bagge, is seeing another of his creations make it to the small screen an adaptation of his 2006 mini-series entitled Apocalypse Nerd. Last fall we heard that Fox had approached Bagge to develop one of his older properties, The Bradleys into a cartoon series. Not much else has been heard since, but I am still hoping it gets made.

As for Apocalypse Nerd, here is the wikipedia description:

It revolves around two men, Perry and Gordo, attempting to survive in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest after Seattle is destroyed in a North Korean nuclear attack. Perry is a somewhat introverted computer programmer whilst his longtime friend Gordo works in various “self-employed” fields and is also a drug dealer. The story is a masculine character study as the two evolve and adapt to the changes in the post-apocalyptic world. Gordo becomes more amoralistic while Perry learns survival skills. Both have unique personality traits which help them adapt.

The story is, as with most of Bagge’s books, a humorous introspection into the human psyche. And obviously someone paid attention across the pond as it seems the BBC will be making a 6 episode series entitled Fallout for it soon. Today a trailer was released and I am looking forward to the series being ported to BBC America so all my friends can enjoy his humor and story telling.

Starting in July with SUPERMAN #701 and WONDER WOMAN #601, superstar writer J.
We’ll have more details about who’ll be teaming with JMS on both titles — not to mention the exciting new directions he’ll be pointing our heroes toward — in the coming months. But today is about JMS and how he sees these great characters and what they stand for.

Why: If you did not participate in the past, whether as a fan or an exhibitor, you missed a lot—don’t be left out in 2010. 2009 was another terrific year for the show. Attendance was over 3,000 attendees and exhibitors, along with dozens of printers, distributors, retailers, and other industry professionals.

There were over 450 people registered as exhibitors and we sold over 170 exhibitor tables. SPX has a unique format of only selling exhibitor space to independent publishers and not to retailers. This provides a very intimate and friendly atmosphere for our creators and fans to mingle. At the same time, there’s a wide array of programming for all to enjoy.

For more information on how you can register as an exhibitor, go to the Exhibitor Registration page.

About the Show

SPX 2010 will be held the weekend of September 10 and 11, 2010 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel & Conference Center in Bethesda, MD, just one mile outside the nation’s capital, Washington DC. In its fifteenth year SPX now serves as the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books and the discovery of new creative talent.

SPX will bring together over 400 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, distributors, and each other. SPX will be open to the public September 10th from 11am Saturday, and run through 7pm that evening. The celebration continues Sunday from noon to 6pm. In addition, expect great programming all weekend long for you to enjoy!

SPX 2010 marks the fourteenth annual presentation of The Ignatz Awards for outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse, recognizes outstanding work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an artform and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz is a festival prize, the first such of the United States comic book industry. Winners will be determined by ballot during SPX and presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony.

As with every year profits from SPX will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, protecting the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals.

SPX is run by the following people:

Jeff Alexander, Executive Director, Executive Committee

There were a couple of good tidbits that came out this week on the upcoming Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds.

First up from Variety, we find that Sony Imageworks will be handling the special effects for the film.

Overall vfx supervisors on the project are Karen Goulekas (“The Day After Tomorrow”) and Kent Houston (“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”). Jim Berney (“I Am Legend”) will be vfx supervisor for Imageworks.

Now for the big news. Cosmic Book News has aquired some leaked concept art for the other Green Lanterns. For those not familiar with the mythology, the Green Lantern Corp is like an intergalactic police corp. Each guarding a sector of space. In the film, Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) will become the protector of Space Sector 2814 where Earth is located.

In the film, Hal must go under training by the Corps, probably by Kilowag as that is one of his main roles in the comics. Here are the images:

According to Ain’t It Cool News, Kevin Falls (creator of the excellent but short-lived Journeyman TV series) has completed a script for a new series on FX called Powers. This will be based on the comic book series Powers by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Oeming.

This is an excellent comic and I have been hoping they would make this into a TV series since reading the first few issues. From Wiki:

Powers is set in a world where superpowers are relatively common but not mundane. It follows the lives of two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, police officers in a Homicide department devoted to cases that involve “powers” (people with superpowers). Walker himself used to be a costumed superhero named Diamond, but became a police officer after he lost his abilities. Though stripped of his powers, he still retains his contacts within the superhero community, even becoming engaged to an ex-colleague, who is later killed. In later issues, Walker is offered the chance to become the world’s latest secret Guardian as part of The Millennium Guard, a secret group of intergalactic guardians, accepting the responsibility and the powers that come with it.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that this turns out at least half as good as what I can forsee in my head!

So it looks like we may know who Ryan Reynolds will be tussling with in the Green Lantern movie next year, Hector Hammond. The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Hector will be played by Peter Sarsgaard, best known to me for his role in Jarhead and K-19. This comes just about a week after it was announced that Blake Lively was cast as Carol Ferris in the film.

For those of you not familiar with Hector Hammond, he is a pretty petty criminal who stumbles upon a meteorite that causes him to ‘evolve’, basically super increasing his intellect. Now a side effect in the comic is the fact that his head is enlarged also. Looks goofy actually, but in the 60′s that was a good thing for supervillains. Not sure how they will play that up in the movie or maybe skip it all together.

He’s a good villain for Green Lantern and it’s probably not best to pop GL’s nemesis Sinestro in the first movie. Sure he will be in the second film (am I getting ahead of myself?).

Years ago, before there were such things as Comic Book stores, retailers of periodicals would get credit for unsold items by sending back the top portion of the cover. This is still done by some book retailers but it was never presented as an opportunity for comic book stores.

This week, Marvel announced in a press release that they will be having a special variant edition of Seige #3 with Deadpool on the cover. How do you get this ultra rare comic? The only way is to send in 50 strips (top portion of a comic book cover) to Marvel. Oh, and not just any 50 strips, but specific DC comics:

Adventure Comics #4

Booster Gold #26

Doom Patrol #4

Justice League Of America #39

Outsiders #24.

R.E.B.E.L.S #10

Wow…I don’t know if I should be shocked by this or not. It’s really not going to affect the small comic retailers as several of these sold out quickly and 50 comics is quite a few to trade in for a single variant covered comic. The large retailers, or those who REALLY goofed on their numbers, can benefit from the exclusive. But to me this really smacks at a war cry between the publishers.

Perhaps the gloves are coming off now that DC Entertainment is handling film/TV rights a little more aggressively. Perhaps Marvel is a little jealous at the great response the Blackest Night story arc had at DC comics. All I want to know is how DC will respond or retaliate.

Okay…maybe not so much Wolverine 2, but the rest are going to rock our socks off.

First up we have the Avengers movie hitting theaters May 4, 2012. This will be the grand experiment, bringing together the Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor franchises together. Sounds like a lot of characters on the big screen, and a lot of ego’s on set.

Next we have Star Trek 2 (or is that Star Trek XII?), taking the coveted July 4th weekend spot with a June 29th release date. This was stated by Paramount Pictures last week. We know from previous news reports that JJ Abrams is working feverishly to get the script completed so he can work on his next project, Mission Impossible IV.

Finally we have the sequel to Wolverine coming Summer of 2012. In an interview last week at the People Choice awards, Hugh Jackman stated that the second film would start filming a year to a year and a half from now. I doubt that they will put the release to close to the Avengers, but at the same time you may want to capitalize on the super-hero fans as much as possible.

Whew…that is a lot of genre for one summer. The fan boys are going to have to get better summer jobs to pay for all those movies!

Now obviously its the last one there that has me excited, being a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan. In fact, since the strip creator has always limited the amount of commercialization allowed, this may be the first non-book item released on the subject.

The movie looks like it will be loosely based on the recent limited comic series from Marvel, X-Men: First Class. In the comics we learn the origin of the X-Men team, how Xavier located and recruited the young Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman and Angel. Not sure how they will work in Iceman and Angel since the previous films skewed their origins. I read the comics and enjoyed that they were able to keep much of the same fun element of the original X-Men comics yet update them enough for current (ie, younger) readers to enjoy.

Singer spoke to Ustream at the Avatar Premier this week:

In an article on Variety, Singer stated:

“This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn,” Singer said. “There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from ‘X-Men’ will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”

Here’s looking forward to a new X-Men movie and forgetting the third one ever happened!

Techland has some good descriptions about each title, so I won’t try to paraphrase their good work. I will say that I have read 80% of these titles and will gladly pick up the other 20% to see what I have missed. Many of these are ongoing and I still follow them, like Ultimates, The Authority and Planetary (though it has taken over a decade for them to eek out a meager 27 issues).

Some of the best titles have ended, like Y: The Last Man and 100 Bullets. Oh, and Hollywood if your listening, 100 Bullets could be made into an excellent HBO series almost overnight. And for those not in the know, Y has already been optioned and we are looking at a film release in the next couple of years.

Hey, the holidays are here, grab something off the list for the comic book fans and even the not so comic book fans. There truly is something for everyone.

Straight from the movie magazine Movieline, we have reports for the next Spider-Man movie installment, Spider-Man 4! As has been the case in the past, more villains in a movie is better…or at least that is what Hollywood tends to think. Personally I think the last Batman film showed the world that if you have a good story and a great actor, you don’t need to muddy the waters with extra bad guys.

But I digress…Movieline reports that John Malkovich is in talks to become the Vulture in the next arachnid installment. I certainly like John, and he doesn’t have to go far to look like the Vulture from the comic books. For those of you unenlightened, the Vulture is one of Spider-mans old school villains, an engineer inventor who designs a flight suit that allows him to soar above the rabble below, and enhances his strength dramatically. This could make for some excellent air combat as Spidey swings between buildings battling Malkovich.

Now comes the odd choice…apparently Anne Hathaway is looking to be in the film also, perhaps even as Felicia Hardy (known to the comic readers as the Black Cat). But the role that seems to be involved for her is a new character called the Vulturess. Really Marvel…can’t you come up with something better than that!?

Regardless I am still curious as to see what they are going to do with Curt Connors, played by Dylan Baker for the last two features. He eventually becomes a villain (misunderstood) called the Lizard in the comics. They gotta throw this guy a bone eventually! (no pun intended)

Alien Legion was a comic ahead of its time. The original mini-series was published back in the mid-80′s by Epic Comics and while not a big smash in sales, it was critically acclaimed. Over the years there have been a couple of series based off the original, each of them a good read. And yes, I still have my original set stored away.

Description from Wikipedia:
Alien Legion was an early Epic Comics title about the members of a military unit called Force Nomad, composed of the “dregs of the universe” and similar to the French Foreign Legion. The cast includes leader Sarigar, whose lower half is serpentine, fully humanoid Torie Montroc, and probably the most popular character, Jugger Grimrod, a Thraxian.

In 2010 we will see a resurgence of Legion activity, including a recently released Alien Legion Omnibus Volume 1 and word that Jerry Bruckheimer is working on a film for Disney. Bruckheimer can certainly make some amazing films, so lets hope he does a good job on translating this onto the big screen.

Of course, corresponding to my post about 2012, I can only presume that the tag line for the film will be “Alien Legion: Solar System Destroyers!”

Today Production Weekly tweeted that a pilot for Global Frequency was being made for the CW, written by Scott Nimerfro (Pushing Daisys).

Now this is good news to me, I was a big fan of the Warren Ellis comic back in the early 2000′s. There was even a pilot made for the WB back in 2005, but it got dropped before it even officially got released (it was unofficially leaked to the net that year though, not bad if you can find it, I liked it).

The concept is a good one that can be translated easily enough to the small screen. Essentially its a covert agency that uses smart mob techniques to mobilize its 1001 agents. From wikipedia:
The purpose of the organization is to protect and rescue the world from the consequences of the various secret projects that the governments of the world have established, which are unknown to the public at large.

The TV series creator, Joss Whedon, realized that people really wanted to know what happened to Buffy and all the worlds Slayers after the series ended. So Joss continued the TV series on into comic book form.

Now, according to Sci-fi Wire, they are making a series of motion comic webisodes. Think a moving comic, not quite animation, with voice overs. It does not seem to be voiced by the original actors, but I am not to concerned by this. The comic book art was fantastically done by Georges Jeanty.

It will not be a direct shot-for-shot adaptation of the comic, so even those who have read the comic will want to tune in. No word yet on release date. But heres the voice over casting call:
