According to Marvel, Hugo Weaving has been confirmed in the role of Red Skull in the upcoming Captain America: First Avenger movie slated for release in .  Hugo Weaving has played iconic roles such as Agent Smith in The Matrix, Elrond in The Lord of the Rings trilogy(and reportedly the upcoming Hobbit films), the voice of Megatron in the Transformer movies, and most recently Abberline in The Wolfman.

Alright…stepping back a bit, I can fully remove myself from the fact that this movie is not going to be like the comic series. That isn’t a problem with me at all. The problem I have right now is that hollywood refuses to make a Comic Book movie without “Super-ing” it up.

In the comic, Jonah is essentially raised by the Apache but then branded by them in the end thus explaining his facial scars. Later in life as an ex-confederate soldier he became a bounty hunter with a strong code of ethics when it came to protecting the innocent.

But here we have the trailer showing they changed his entire origin just to satisfy a meager plot point. I can almost live with that…but then to give him super natural powers? And what the hell is up with twin gatling guns on a horse!? This is far more like that junker of a movie Wild Wild West that came out a few years ago than a solid Western story. And the sad thing is we have had some excellent Westerns come out over the last few years, making good box office returns also…so it’s not like they had to make these changes to bring in an audience.

First I cost us about an hour by having to head back to the car after getting half way to McCormick Place on the subway. My old age is creeping up on me since I had forgotten my badge and the flyers for Fan Rants there. Not only that but I dropped my phone and lost the battery cover onto the train tracks. Definately not a good start for the day.

But once we got back on the train we ran into one C2E2 fan heading into town from the airport. Obviously it was a treat for the Cub fans heading to the game and the business people heading to work to find a Ghostbuster on the train with them.

After a very meandering journey from the Blue Line to McCormick Place, involving a nice walk and a bus ride, we arrived ready to have a great time. And Kevin was already beaming with his fancy Press Pass swinging around his neck.

We headed to the special Kick Ass autograph session and were lucky to get the last 2 passes to get in. Maybe our luck was changing after all! We also ran into a couple of really cool guys in line who had shared some of our DragonCon adventures in the past. Not that we had known them before, but we do now. In fact go check out evilsteveproductions.com and give them some support.

The autograph session went quick with everyone being greeted by Aaron Johson (Kick Ass), Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist). Very pleasant kids, I wish them the best in their upcoming careers.

For the next few hours we just wondered the exhibit hall and took in some of the costumers and checked out the warez for sale. All the major publishers were on site pushing their comics and toys. There is a nice artist alley setup with a plethora of famous and not so famous comic artists. And a good selection of your favorite webcomic publishers are on hand.

One interesting thing that I have not seen at other cons is a section for Tattoo artists to setup and sell their services. I think this is an awesome idea as there is a great crossover traffic between the fans.

We caught a couple of panels near the end of the day, but by that time we were exhausted. But no matter how tired we are right now…Saturday should really put us through our paces.

One of the questions brought forward was why he hasn’t done more with the Asian mythologies, of which he commented that it was very alien to him. In fact the recent comic with Hellboy in Japan made him realize he didn’t know how to draw a Japanese door! He feels that he needs to find the right artist for these stories. One of which he wants to base in China.

Some of the upcoming Hellboy stories will take place in that 50 year span where he roamed the world, before the prophecy came about on his destiny. This is excellent news as Hellboy comics have been absent from the book shelves over the last couple of years.

One thing he emphasized over and over is that he is doing his best to keep the Hellboy movie universe and comic universe very separate. He firmly believes that what Del Toro does with the films are very different than the comics. Obviously the Liz/Hellboy relationship are very different in the two, I hope he keeps to his guns on this.

Mike is expanding his art line on his website, www.mikemignola.com. He will be providing more limited edition prints and sounds like we have a lot to look forward too.

If you’re not giggling right now, you’re reading the wrong blog.  In fact, if you haven’t been giggling since you first read “Black Hole”…

Anyway, the original 1979 story focused on a lost ship that is found by a deep space exploration vessel right on the even horizon of a massive black hole.  The ship, named the Cygnus, is inhabited by one man, a possibly crazy scientist bent on flying into the black hole, and his legion of robot slaves.  The story was one of “I’m gonna fly into this here black hole, ya see” “no you’re not, mister.  We’re gonna stop you!” “KILL KILL KILL”.  At least I think that’s how they talked back in the 70′s.

Reinforcing this point is the fact that they’ve hired David Scarpa to write the script.  “Who?” you ask?  Well look him up on IMDB!  He wrote the screenplay for the 2008 movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still”!!  He also wrote “The Last Castle”!  Aaaand that’s all, at least according to IMDB.  Now I don’t want to be the one to say “oh, this guy is a sh*tty writer”.  Please don’t think that’s what I’m saying.  For all I know this guy might be the “next big thing”.  What I’m saying is that Fox went to what looks to be the least expensive guy they could so the movie could be considered “in production” and they could keep their rights without spending too much money.  I’m betting this movie never gets made, at least not in this current incarnation.  There’s no director attached, no actors, no nothing.  Way to go, Fox.

The movie was just picked to play at the South by Southwest Movie Festival (SXSW) sometime between March 12th and March 20th.  I’m hoping it gets a wider release than just the film festival circuit. I’m sure the creators are too. It sounds like the’ve put in a lot of work. “2 and 1/2 years…63,686 frequent flyer miles… 634 hours of footage…14 TB of drive space… 126 interviews… 719 fan submissions…” Sounds intense. Keep an eye on SXSW’s movie site (pops) for more info. The official site (pops) for the movie is a good source of information too.

Klingon Bird of Prey?

According to NASA, this is a picture of a Klingon Bird of Prey hurtling through space at 11,000 miles per hour.

Or it may be a comet, the result in this case of 2 asteroids colliding. It’s interesting because it’s something that hasn’t been seen before. First there’s the oddly distinct X shape at the beginning of the tail. Then there’s the fact that the comet’s nucleus is OUTSIDE THE TAIL ALL TOGETHER! Normally, a comet’s tail is produced when the nucleus heats up and starts shedding it’s mass, usually engulfing the head in a gaseous cloud. This comet is too far out for that. According to NASA, “P/2010 A2 may have a different origin. It orbits in the warm, inner regions of the asteroid belt where its nearest neighbors are dry rocky bodies lacking volatile materials” which makes it likely that that the debris tail was produce via an impact rather than the normal solar melting way.

Music this week was from the artist Pinkle. The first album was called “Allah-ca-zam“.  The second album was named “The Sound of Music” I listened to both these albums while editing, and I must say, they are very good.

When Lost first aired in September of 2004,  I watched the first 40 or so minutes and thought “meh, this isn’t going anywhere” and turned it off.  I can admit when I’m wrong.  I was wrong.  By the time I decided Lost might be worth watching, it was already season 3 and I thought to myself “I’ll wait until the show is done and then I’ll watch all at once on DVD”.  I did my best (and I was pretty successful at) ignoring all things Lost for YEARS, so when I finally broke down and started watching them just before the season 5 DVDs came out, I started with a pretty clean slate.  What I was confronted with felt pretty monumental.  We’re talking 103 episodes at roughly 43 minutes an episode.  That’s almost 74 hours of Lost! That’s more than 3 days of doing nothing but watching Lost!!  I started my journey in late October/early November with the pilot episode and my first thought was “Was I high? How is this not awesome??!?” Right from the get go I was mesmerized by how good it was!

As I was traveling on my way down Lost Street, I kept hearing “oh yeah, season 1 and 2 are great”, implying that season 3 and 4 were not so great.  When I asked about this I was told “yeah, those seasons start to drag some”.  Well let me say as a recently deflowered Lost virgin, those seasons are easily as good as the others.  No, not “The Others”, but the other seasons.  Who knows if The Others are good or not, what with everybody on the island claiming the be the good guys!  I think you folks who watched it at time of airing probably started suffering from Lost fatigue.  I couldn’t imagine either a) watching those episodes with commercials or b) watching those episodes with a week or in the case of seasons months apart.  I suppose I’d better learn to imagine it as I’ll be watching season 6 as it airs.  I’m not looking forward to it.

I think the story is a good one.  I started out thinking Jack was great and now I can’t stand him.  He’s a big fat jerk.  I have no idea what to think of Ben.  Kate sucks too.  As much as I disliked Sawyer in the beginning, he’s become the guy who I like the most.  My opinions on Jin and Sun have reversed as well.  I don’t like Sun much, and while my first impressions of Jin were ones of anger and frustration, he’s now one of my favorites as well.  To me that’s the beauty of the show… The characters you’re SUPPOSED to hate, you love, and vice versa.  Let me repeat: Jack is an asshole.  I hope he dies in a plane crash.

The whole time travel thing didn’t bother me at all.  I heard some folks complaining about it, however I really enjoyed getting to know the Dharma folks.  It was interesting to see their role on the island and how the “Hostiles/Others” interacted with them.  I also loved meeting Pierre Chang.  After seeing him on all those grainy Dharma Initiative training films, it was great to finally meet the man.

In the build up to season6 it has been nearly impossible to not hear rumors and speculation, even if just in words.  “Alternate reality” “Fake Locke” “Smoke monster” all have new meaning to me.  Personally, I love spoilers and have actively sought them out.  I won’t share anything here, but they’re not hard to find if you go looking.

To sum up, I watched 74 hours of TV in just under 3 months (with 2 major holidays in the middle) and I think Lost is one of the best things to ever happen to TV.  I never got sick of it and I think that seasons 3, 4, and 5 were incredibly relevant and great to watch.  I’m just wondering how the f*ck they survived a hydrogen bomb going off under their feet.  I guess we’ll find out tomorrow when flight 815 lands at LAX.  oops… SPOILER!

Crap, it looks like Google’s nerd to english translator is down again.  Either way, enjoy this weeks episode.  It was a lot of fun for us to record and we hope that translates to it being a lot of fun to listen to.

You may be saying to yourself “why does he keep calling me ‘Dom’?  I’m not calling you Dom… I’m calling Dom Dom.  Not you.  Got it?  Now you might be saying “fine, asshole… Who is Dom?”  Dominick is the first person to donate to the Fan Rants cause!  We’ll always remember our first and don’t worry, the blood is normal.

I went with German electronic industrial this week because I used to have a friend named Dominick who really liked the stuff.  I don’t think it’s the same Dominick, but what the hell.

The Sleeper Must Awaken

Pierre Morel was recently interviewed by MTV and a lot of folks (myself included) liked what he had to say. First off, it sounds like he holds my sentiments on the 1984 David Lynch movie:

“As a David Lynch movie, I loved it. As a ‘Dune’ fan, I was not such a big fan.”

Preach on, my brotha!! I really enjoyed the movie, but I was left with the thought “Rain? It doesn’t rain on Arrakis for another thousand years!!” And WTF was up with those “weirding module” things? As a standalone movie I loved it. As a movie based on a book, I think it strayed too much.

Morel goes on:

“I’ve been a fan of the book since I was a teenager. I read that when I was 15, maybe. I’ve been reading it over and over again – well, I’m 45 now, so for 30 years. The fun story, actually, is that there were six books in that first series that Frank Herbert wrote. Every time I was going to buy a new one – because I couldn’t buy all six at one time – I was reading the previous ones so I would not forget anything. So, by the time I bought the sixth book I had already read the first one six times! So, I’m a hardcore fan.”

EXCELLENT!!! So we have a “hardcore fan” that doesn’t think the last theatrical release did the books justice.   He also knows that us hardcore fans will string him up by his balls if he fucks it up:

“it’s a challenge; there’s a lot of expectation, all the readers will be waiting for me with their shotguns. All the non-readers will also be waiting for us, because it’s such a complex, rich novel and you have to make it accessible to those who have not read the book. So, it’s a tough challenge but I’m very excited about that.”

I can say this: He’s sounds like EXACTLY like the guy I want directing this movie. He’s currently working on another movie (“From Paris With Love” due for a Feb. 5, 2010 release), but he hope that Dune is the next movie he does. I hope so too.

I won’t tell you about the latest Project Mayhem initiative… You’ll have to buy the 10th anniversary Fight Club Blu-ray to find out.  That, or you could just google and probably have it ruined for you.  Just don’t be so quick to return your malfunctioning disc to the store…

Speaking of, can you believe it’s been 10 years??  Actually, it feels like it was longer than 10 years for me.  When I think of Fight Club I think of my years as a rambunctious teenager, fighting and fucking my way through life, not giving a damn what anyone else said.  I really connected with the movie in a “fuck yeah!” kind of way.  I read the book after I saw the movie, and felt even more connected to the story.  It’s still one of the books I go back and re-read every few years.

If you’re saying to yourself “Hey I’ve got loads of money and I’ve already bought the Watchmen Ultimate Cut and Star Trek, what should I buy next?”, my suggestion would be Fight Club 10th anniversary.
