Amanda Waller is in the House!

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

For those of you who do not keep up with DC Comics, Amanda Waller is a force to be reckonded with. While she has no super powers, she has political and military might and knows how to use it. I remember her best leading a group called the Suicide Squad. This was a band of super villains sent on suicide missions that if they completed, and got home alive, they would be pardoned for their crimes.

Seeing her stand up to these baddies showed just how much brass she commanded. And now I am happy to hear (thanks Variety) that her character will be appearing in the upcoming Green Lantern movie! Not only that, but she will be portrade by Angela Bassett.

That last part gives me some pause, as much as I love Bassett, Waller is a fairly large woman. I am only going to guess Hollywood decided that they wanted a strong woman in the role and not necessarily a woman of ‘size’. Kind of a shame, but at least they got a quality actress for the roll.

Speaking of which, I am going to take a guess here and say that she will be doing what Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) has been doing in the Marvel movies. Probably showing up, keeping an eye on these new super powered people and putting together a team in the future. Perhaps she will be the inspiration behind a Justice League of America movie!

DC Heroes to Replace Harry Potter Franchise

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Warner Brothers head Alan Horn has made it official, after the last Harry Potter film comes out (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows II, July 2011) the studio is switching gears from kid fantasy to super heroics! Heres the quote from Horn at ShoWest:

As we ease out of Harry Potter, we hope to bring you the excitement of the DC [Comics] Library!

On the horizon we have the Green Lantern film being released June 2011. And we have been reporting on the Batman and Superman franchises in pre-production. Also there is the Flash film that has been in the heavy rumor mill over the last year…but what else? What do you think should be the next big DC hero in the theaters?

Big Head Hammond Is Green Lanterns Villian

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

So it looks like we may know who Ryan Reynolds will be tussling with in the Green Lantern movie next year, Hector Hammond. The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Hector will be played by Peter Sarsgaard, best known to me for his role in Jarhead and K-19. This comes just about a week after it was announced that Blake Lively was cast as Carol Ferris in the film.

For those of you not familiar with Hector Hammond, he is a pretty petty criminal who stumbles upon a meteorite that causes him to ‘evolve’, basically super increasing his intellect. Now a side effect in the comic is the fact that his head is enlarged also. Looks goofy actually, but in the 60′s that was a good thing for supervillains. Not sure how they will play that up in the movie or maybe skip it all together.

He’s a good villain for Green Lantern and it’s probably not best to pop GL’s nemesis Sinestro in the first movie. Sure he will be in the second film (am I getting ahead of myself?).

Green Lantern Gets The Green Light

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

After months of rumors and false starts, today Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment gave the big thumb ring up for the Green Lantern movie. This according to Karen Goulekas the visual effects supervisor on her blog:

”‘Green Lantern’ got the official green light today,” she reported yesterday. “And not a second too soon — only 10 weeks out from shooting!”

So looks like March we will see Ryan Reynolds donning the green and black tights. This will be the second comic book character for Ryan as he is staring in the Deadpool film also. I really enjoy him as an actor and while I find his snarky humor more related for the Deadpool character than Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) I have the utmost confidence that he will pull off both roles well.

(Oh, and that is not an official shot of Ryan, just a fan rendition of what he may look like in the role.)
