Fan Rants Episode 19
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010Barely legal… Welcome to Fan Rants Episode 19. This episode was edited rather drunkenly. It was recorded that way too. We talk about some movies. Since there’s not too much happening there, we bust into TV, where we talk about Lost. Due to a quadrennial sporting event, there hasn’t really been much on. Anyway, without further adieu, here is your episode.
Music this week was first from the artist Kudai off the album Shah Mat
The second artist was Fresh Body Shop from the album Make This End

Fan Rants Episode 16
Monday, February 1st, 2010Fan Rants episode 16 is now ready for your comsumption. This week there were some very minor technical problems, mostly involving the recording software freezing for a split second and cutting off the ends of words and pauses and things like that. We talk about the Avengers movie, the Lobo movie, Sherlock Holmes 2, cat f*cking, Chuck, Fringe, Comics, and all the usual stuff that you’ve (hopefully) come to love and expect from us. heh, “come to love”
Music this week was from the artist Pinkle. The first album was called “Allah-ca-zam“. The second album was named “The Sound of Music” I listened to both these albums while editing, and I must say, they are very good.

Comcast – Will they ruin Hulu?
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
So as you have no doubt heard, GE has agreed to sell NBC to Comcast (pops, in case you have not heard). What does this mean for Hulu? I think a common (and incorrect) belief is that NBC owns Hulu. NBC owns 30% of Hulu. Comcast owns 51% of NBC. That’s not saying they are powerless. Far from, actually. Much like the airlines, as one network goes, the others generally follow. Everyone is afraid of being left behind. The good news is that Comcast COO Steve Burke has publicly stated “We [Comcast] think that going forward, you’re going to continue to have free broadcast stuff on Hulu, and cable stuff on TV Everywhere.”, TV Everywhere being Comcasts cable content service, similar to Hulu, that offers it’s subscribers on demand content on the internet. As for a Hulu pay service, Burke said “That’s certainly not in the cards”. So it sounds like Comcast plans to leave things as they lie, at least for the time being. That is if you believe the super mega conglomerate that is Comcast. In my opinion, big companies make their money by telling us one thing and doing another more often than not.
Then again… What if Hulu did go to some kind of a pay model? I don’t think that’d be a bad thing if it was done properly. I’ve heard rumors ranging from “pay for individual shows” to “pay per subscription” to “pay for additional, exclusive content”. These are all just wild rumors, probably not based on any real information. Pure speculation on the part of anyone with an active imagination and a blog. HEY…. I have at least one of those things! Here’s how I think that Hulu could be successful with a pay model:
1. KEEP BROADCAST SHOWS AD SUPPORTED. Basically, don’t change what’s currently on Hulu. It’s a good starting place. I think that a per show/network subscription would end up not making nearly the same amount that is made from ads. Also, a broad, all encompasing site fee would drive away more people than it would keep around.
2. Charge for exclusive extras. This wouldn’t make you all that much money, but the shows are making this content ANYWAY. Bloopers, gag reels, deleted scenes… Think DVD extras.
3. Charge a show based subscription fee for some cable content. I’d HAPPILY pay $3-5 per show a month for a subscription to my favorite Showtime/HBO/Cinemax/Encore/etc shows.
If the above model were put into place, I’d watch all my favorite broadcast shows for free, and I’d end up paying around $15 a month in subscription fees. In other words, Hulu would be making fat bank off my (and many other peoples) lazy ass every month. They would also probably INCREASE their customer base. What do YOU think?
